Two TUM Students Killed in Road Crash While Travelling to Colleague’s Burial

Two students from the Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) have died, while 29 others sustained injuries after a bus carrying mourners was involved in a tragic road accident near Ahero, Kisumu County.

The students were travelling from Mombasa to Kisumu to attend the burial of former TUM student leader Otieno, whose funeral was scheduled for Saturday.

According to TUM Vice Chancellor Prof. Laila U. Abubakar, the students had arrived safely in Kisumu and received the body of their former colleague before the convoy proceeded towards the burial venue.

The accident occurred when the last bus in the convoy reportedly attempted to avoid a head-on collision with an oncoming saloon car. The driver lost control during the manoeuvre, causing the bus to overturn.

Two TUM students lost their lives in the crash, while 29 others sustained injuries and were taken to Lisa Hospital in Ahero and Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) for treatment.

In an update issued on Saturday, TUM said 14 of the injured students had been discharged, while 15 remained admitted at JOOTRH. One of the injured students was referred to Aga Khan Hospital for further treatment.

The tragedy has cast a sombre mood over the TUM community and the ongoing burial preparations for Otieno. The university leadership conveyed condolences to the families of the two students who died while thanking emergency responders, medical personnel, security agencies and members of the public who assisted the victims.

TUM also urged the public to avoid spreading unverified information or sharing graphic images and videos of the accident, asking people to rely on official communication as the affected students and families receive support.

The fatal crash has left the university community mourning the loss of two students during what was intended to be a journey of solidarity and remembrance for a former colleague.
