Opposition Leaders Push for United Front Ahead of 2027

Opposition leaders have intensified efforts to forge a united political front ahead of the 2027 General Election, with growing calls for rival parties and presidential hopefuls to settle on a single candidate to challenge President William Ruto.

Opposition leaders met on Tuesday as part of ongoing consultations aimed at building a broader coalition under the proposed United Alternative Government platform. Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua said the leaders had renewed their commitment to presenting Kenyans with one presidential candidate in the 2027 race.

Gachagua said the opposition would identify its flag bearer through an agreed formula, arguing that a united ticket would be critical to mounting a strong challenge against the Kenya Kwanza administration.

The push for unity comes amid growing political engagements between senior opposition figures, including Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Martha Karua, Fred Matiang'i, Eugene Wamalwa, Gachagua and other leaders.

Kalonzo has also indicated his willingness to support Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna if the senator is ultimately selected as the opposition's preferred presidential candidate, although the question of who should lead the coalition remains unresolved.

Meanwhile, negotiations over a possible joint opposition ticket continue as individual leaders maintain their presidential ambitions. The challenge will be finding a formula acceptable to the different political formations and their supporters while avoiding divisions that could weaken the coalition.

The renewed push for a united front comes as political activity intensifies across the country, with the UDA-ODM partnership on the government side also taking steps towards developing a joint 2027 manifesto.

With exactly one year remaining before the scheduled August 10, 2027 General Election, opposition leaders now face increasing pressure to transform their calls for unity into a concrete political alliance and agree on a single presidential candidate capable of mounting a serious challenge at the ballot.
