NCIC Summons Iraya, Lenku Over Controversial Political Remarks

The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has summoned nominated MP Joseph Wainaina Iraya and Kajiado Governor Joseph Ole Lenku over remarks allegedly made during separate political engagements.

Iraya has been directed to appear before the commission on September 17, 2026, at 10 a.m. at Britam Towers in Nairobi to respond to remarks he allegedly made while addressing residents in Ngeria, Uasin Gishu County, on August 29.

The commission is investigating allegations that Iraya made remarks targeting members of the Kikuyu community who did not support President William Ruto or the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), including an alleged call for them to leave the area.

The NCIC is examining the remarks under provisions of the National Cohesion and Integration Act relating to ethnic intolerance and hate speech.

Lenku has also been ordered to appear before the commission on September 17 at 2 p.m. over remarks allegedly made at Ewuaso Oonkidong’i in Kajiado West Constituency on August 22.

The governor is being questioned over comments concerning the nomination of political candidates from outside the Maasai community in Kajiado, Narok and other areas. He allegedly called on political parties to consider fielding Maasai candidates for positions he argued should be reserved for the community.

The NCIC has warned that failure by either leader to honour the summons could lead to further legal action, including possible arrest warrants and contempt proceedings.

The investigations come amid heightened political activity ahead of the 2027 General Election, with the NCIC increasing scrutiny of political statements that could potentially inflame ethnic tensions or undermine peaceful coexistence.

The cases remain under investigation and do not amount to findings of guilt against either Iraya or Lenku. Both leaders will have an opportunity to respond to the allegations when they appear before the commission.
