Malkia Strikers Launch Title Defence with Dominant Win Over Zambia

Kenya’s national women’s volleyball team, Malkia Strikers, have made a strong start to their title defence after defeating Zambia 3-0 in the opening match of the 2026 CAVB Women’s African Nations Volleyball Championship in Nairobi.

The defending champions controlled the encounter at the Kasarani Indoor Arena, winning the three sets 25-14, 25-9 and 25-11 to begin their campaign in impressive fashion.

Kenya took charge from the opening set and maintained control throughout the match, giving Zambia little opportunity to recover as the hosts secured a commanding straight-sets victory.

Elizabeth Masai Sokoiyo was among Kenya’s standout performers, while coach Geoffrey Omondi used the comfortable victory to rotate his squad as the hosts demonstrated their determination to retain the continental title on home soil.

The win gives Malkia Strikers an early advantage in Pool A, where they are grouped with Zambia and Mali.

Kenya are seeking a record-extending 11th African title, having entered the tournament as the reigning champions after defeating Egypt in the 2023 final.

The 2026 championship has added significance, with the eventual champions set to secure direct qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games, while the top three teams are expected to earn places at the 2027 FIVB Volleyball World Cup.

With the backing of the home crowd, Malkia Strikers will now look to build on their opening victory as they continue their Pool A campaign and pursue a record-extending 11th African title.
