Linda Mwananchi Heads to Court Over Disputed Movement Name

The Linda Mwananchi movement has headed to court after its bid to reserve and register the name “Linda Mwananchi Movement” was rejected, escalating a dispute over the movement’s political identity and registration.

The case has been filed before the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal, challenging the decision by the Registrar of Political Parties to reject the reservation of the name.

The applicants, Pauline Njoki Njoroge, Faith Odhiambo and Michael Caroli Omondi, argue that they had applied to reserve the name but were initially turned down on grounds of public interest.

According to the applicants, the Registrar later agreed to reserve the name following a meeting but reversed the decision a few days later, citing the existence of another political entity, the Liberty National Democratic Alliance, which uses the acronym LINDA.

The movement is now seeking orders to prevent the Registrar from considering, processing, reserving or registering the name “LINDA”, “Linda Mwananchi” or any similar variation in favour of another person or entity while the dispute is being determined.

Linda Mwananchi leaders say the name has become an established political identity built over several months and has gained significant recognition among Kenyans. Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has insisted that the dispute is not merely about registering a political party but also about protecting a political brand associated with the movement.

The tribunal has certified the case as urgent, setting the stage for a legal battle over the disputed name as the movement seeks to secure its political identity ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The dispute is likely to draw further attention as Linda Mwananchi continues to position itself within Kenya’s increasingly competitive opposition landscape.
