Kindiki Warns Mt Kenya Against Political Divisions Ahead of 2027

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has urged residents and leaders from the Mt Kenya region to maintain unity despite growing political differences as the country moves closer to the 2027 General Election.

Speaking at Gaichanjiru Catholic Church in Kandara, Murang’a County, Kindiki warned against allowing political competition to create divisions within communities or undermine peace and stability in the region.

The Deputy President said politics should be viewed as a temporary contest for leadership rather than a reason for communities to turn against one another. He urged residents to evaluate political leaders based on their development record, integrity and ability to serve the public.

Kindiki also cautioned political leaders and their supporters against resorting to insults, violence or destruction of property during political contests. He noted that elections eventually come to an end, while communities and the country continue to live with the consequences of political divisions.

He pointed to Mt Kenya's history of supporting different political leaders while maintaining its social and economic ties, urging residents to preserve the region's unity despite differences in political choices.

His remarks come amid heightened political activity across Mt Kenya, with competing political camps seeking to influence the region's political direction ahead of the 2027 polls. Leaders allied to the government are campaigning for continued support for President William Ruto, while opposition figures and political allies of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua are seeking to consolidate alternative support in the region.

Kindiki's call adds to growing appeals from political and community leaders for Mt Kenya to avoid internal divisions and maintain peaceful coexistence as political competition intensifies.

With Mt Kenya expected to remain an important political battleground, the region's ability to accommodate differing political views while maintaining social cohesion could play a significant role in shaping Kenya's political landscape ahead of the 2027 General Election.
