Kalonzo Rules Out Ruto Deal Ahead of 2027 Election

Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka has ruled out any political deal with President William Ruto ahead of the 2027 General Election, signalling a firm opposition stance as Kenya enters the final year before the polls.

Speaking on Monday, exactly one year before the scheduled election, Kalonzo said there would be no “handshake” or “nusu-mkate” arrangement with Ruto before Kenyans go to the ballot. He maintained that the opposition's focus should be on competing against the President in the election rather than entering into a pre-election power-sharing agreement.

Kalonzo's remarks come amid intensified efforts by opposition leaders to build a united political front capable of challenging the Kenya Kwanza administration in 2027.

The Wiper leader has also indicated his willingness to work with other opposition figures if a consensus can be reached on a presidential candidate. He recently said he would support Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna if Sifuna emerges as the opposition's preferred flag bearer, underscoring the importance of unity in challenging Ruto at the ballot.

At the same time, Kalonzo has continued to position himself as a presidential contender under the Wiper Patriotic Front, campaigning on what he describes as a national “rescue mission” under the “Komboa Kenya” platform.

His latest position sets him apart from the emerging political cooperation between Ruto's UDA and ODM, which has gained momentum following recent engagements between leaders from the two political formations.

With political alliances rapidly taking shape, Kalonzo's rejection of a pre-election deal with Ruto adds another dimension to the increasingly competitive race for the presidency.

As the countdown to the August 10, 2027 General Election continues, opposition leaders face the challenge of balancing individual presidential ambitions with calls for a unified ticket to challenge the incumbent administration.
