
Wildlife authorities probe possible toxic exposure following the deaths of 15 elephants in the Amboseli ecosystem, with the county government now demanding answers.
The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has launched an investigation into the deaths of 15 elephants recorded across the Amboseli ecosystem between June 24 and July 24, 2026, prompting concern among conservationists and local communities. Officials say it is the first time in decades the region has recorded elephant deaths on this scale.
According to KWS, 10 of the elephants exhibited similar clinical signs, including partial paralysis that left them unable to stand before dying within one to two days. The remaining five carcasses were too decomposed or had already been scavenged, complicating efforts to determine an exact cause of death. Most of the affected animals were adult females and their calves, with only one adult male among the fatalities.
The deaths were not recorded inside Amboseli National Park itself. KWS Head of Communication Duncan Wanyama said the elephants were found on community ranches surrounding the park — including Kimana Sanctuary and Kuku Ranch — at distances of roughly 15 to 30 kilometres from the park's boundaries.
Veterinary teams from Nairobi, Tsavo and Amboseli were deployed to investigate, treat affected animals, conduct post-mortem examinations and collect samples. Preliminary laboratory tests by the University of Nairobi detected a potential toxic substance in samples from several of the elephants. However, follow-up analysis by the Government Chemist did not detect any of the toxins tested, and KWS says the exact cause remains unconfirmed. The agency has since broadened its probe to include water sources and other environmental samples in the affected areas, to establish whether the animals were exposed to a shared contaminant.
Kenya has previously recorded elephant poisonings linked to poaching and human-wildlife conflict, but authorities have not yet ruled in or out any specific cause in this case. The Kajiado County Government has demanded explanations from wildlife authorities over the deaths.
KWS has reassured the public that there is currently no evidence of any risk to human health, noting the condition observed has only been seen in elephants with no indication it is transmissible to people. The agency says it has intensified surveillance across the Amboseli ecosystem and continues to monitor elephant populations as investigations continue. Conservationists say the outcome will be crucial in protecting Kenya's elephant population — Amboseli remains one of Africa's most important wildlife habitats and home to some of the continent's last surviving "super tusker" bull elephants.
