IEBC Unveils New Campaign Financing Rules Ahead of 2027 Polls
Electoral body sets spending limits and tighter financial controls for candidates, political parties and campaign teams.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has gazetted new campaign financing regulations ahead of the 2027 General Election, introducing spending limits and tighter financial controls aimed at promoting transparency and accountability in political campaigns.
The Election Campaign Financing Regulations, 2026, apply to political parties, candidates, campaign teams and donors, with the electoral commission requiring political players to comply with the prescribed financial rules.
Under the new framework, the IEBC has set campaign spending limits for different elective positions, with the presidential campaign ceiling set at approximately KSh6.1 billion. Spending limits have also been established for other elective positions across the country.
The regulations seek to curb excessive campaign spending, promote a level playing field among contestants and strengthen accountability in the management of political funds.
Political parties, candidates and campaign teams will be required to maintain proper financial records and comply with rules governing contributions, donations and campaign expenditure. Donors and political actors will also be expected to adhere to the prescribed limits and reporting requirements.
The IEBC has cautioned political parties, candidates and other campaign stakeholders against violating the new regulations, warning that financial activities during the election period will be subject to increased scrutiny.
The move comes as political activity continues to intensify across the country, with parties and prospective candidates positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The implementation of the new regulations is expected to bring greater scrutiny to campaign financing and encourage more transparent political fundraising as Kenya moves closer to the next electoral cycle. The IEBC will be responsible for monitoring compliance and enforcing the applicable rules throughout the campaign period.
