Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has unveiled The Equitable Party (TEP) as his political vehicle for the 2027 General Election, taking charge of the party as he advances his presidential bid.

Sifuna was declared the party's leader and presidential candidate during its unveiling ceremony in Nairobi on Sunday, October 4, in an event attended by several political leaders associated with the Linda Mwananchi Movement.

TEP is not a newly registered party. It was registered on March 25, 2022, but its leadership is now being restructured to accommodate Sifuna and other figures associated with the Linda Mwananchi Movement.

Party leader Gilbert Marava said the existing members would remain part of the organisation as new leaders and supporters linked to Sifuna's political movement are incorporated into its structures.

Suba South MP Caroli Omondi said the party was being developed as a platform to address issues including corruption, tribalism, inequality and adherence to national values. He compared the existing party structure to a vehicle whose chassis had already been acquired and which would now be built around a broader political agenda.

The party uses green and yellow as its colours and features a scales-of-justice symbol. Its slogan is "Tusawazishe," which translates to "Let us equalise."

Speaking during the unveiling, Sifuna said the party would promote equal opportunities, accountability and citizen participation in governance. He said its leadership would consult citizens before making decisions and remain accountable for its actions.

Sifuna also said the party had assembled experts to help develop its policy proposals, with issues such as the cost of living, unemployment and government expenditure expected to feature in its agenda.

The unveiling comes days after the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal overturned an earlier decision by the Registrar of Political Parties rejecting an application to reserve the Linda Mwananchi Movement name. The Registrar subsequently approved the reservation of the name for 90 days.

Sifuna said the intention is to rebrand The Equitable Party as the Linda Mwananchi Movement in the coming days. He, however, said the party could retain the TEP identity and proceed to the 2027 election under its existing name if further obstacles prevent the proposed rebranding.

The distinction is significant because the reservation of the Linda Mwananchi name does not by itself amount to registration of a new political party. The current plan is to use the existing TEP structure while pursuing the proposed change of name.

Several political leaders attended the unveiling, including Siaya Governor James Orengo, Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya, Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale, Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka, Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino.

The leaders called for the party to develop a national outlook and bring together supporters from different communities and generations. Khalwale urged Sifuna to work with other opposition leaders as he builds the party ahead of the 2027 election.

With TEP now serving as Sifuna's immediate political vehicle, attention will turn to its restructuring, the development of its policy platform and the proposed transition to the Linda Mwananchi identity as the 2027 General Election approaches.
